As city council prepares to vote today on nearly $18 million to extend 84th Avenue through Bear Creek Park, Surrey First Councillor Linda Annis says Surrey voters shouldn’t be surprised by Doug McCallum’s "my-way-or-the-highway" approach.

"You only have to go back to his original term in office in the 90s to see how little interest he had in consulting the people of Surrey," said Annis. "His bad habits then are his bad habits now, and we’re paying the price as residents and taxpayers. For Doug McCallum, Surrey taxpayers are simply ATM machines. Just look at your tax bill and you’ll see what I mean."

Annis said there is overwhelming opposition to the 84th Avenue extension through Bear Creek Park, and people are both "frustrated and angry" that they are being ignored.

"There was never any real consultation, and the fact that more than 7,000 people have stepped up to sign petitions against the extension through the park reinforces just how betrayed people feel," said Annis. "Anyone else would press the pause button and listen to the community, but not Doug McCallum. But I’m not surprised. After all, we saw that same behaviour the last time he was in office and nothing has changed. If there’s any good news, it’s that the next municipal election is just 15 months away. That’s the one time Surrey residents can speak up and really be heard."

Calgary Chamber Warns of Economic Fallout From Alberta Split

A report commissioned by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce warns of significant economic consequences if Alberta were to separate from Canada. The study, led by University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe, estimates that trade costs could increase by 5% to 8%, potentially resulting in 44,000 to 69,000 fewer jobs in Calgary compared with remaining in Canada. The report notes that Alberta is Canada’s most trade-exposed jurisdiction, making the province particularly vulnerable to higher trade costs. The report comes three weeks before Albertans vote on 10 referendum questions, including one on

The B.C. Conservatives have launched an attack on the B.C. NDP and Leader David Eby during the provincial election campaign, accusing them of breaking election promises and pursuing failed economic policies.
