Alberta’s Official Opposition NDP is pressing Premier Danielle Smith and the province’s four health ministers to implement emergency measures as doctors raise alarms over overcrowded hospitals.

The call comes after the Alberta Medical Association reported that hospitals have been operating at more than 110 per cent capacity for over a year, creating strains on both staff and patient care.

Dr. Brian Wirzba, president of the association, said public statements are a last resort for physicians who have repeatedly voiced concerns through internal channels without seeing adequate action.

Meanwhile, Acute Care Alberta, the agency established to take over some functions of Alberta Health Services, described the situation as requiring “all hands on deck.” Its CEO emphasized that every hospital provider and regulatory authority is coordinating efforts to relieve pressure on emergency departments and other critical services.

The NDP highlighted that prolonged overcrowding can impact patient wait times, emergency care, and overall health outcomes, urging the government to outline immediate steps to address the crisis.

Canada records job losses in January as labour market shows new signs of strain

Canada’s economy took a step backward in January as the country recorded a net loss of about 25,000 jobs, according to the latest Labour Force Survey released by Statistics Canada. The decline marks the first monthly drop in employment since late summer and signals renewed pressure in key sectors tied to trade and construction. The manufacturing and construction industries experienced the sharpest losses, with economists pointing to ongoing trade uncertainty and U.S. tariff pressures as contributing factors. Private-sector employment and part-time work were particularly affected, while women
