Alberta premier to provide update on fall referendum questions

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is expected to provide an update today on a planned provincewide referendum set for October, including previously announced questions tied to social policy and governance.

According to a February announcement from the Alberta government, the referendum is to include up to nine questions. Among them are proposals that would restrict access to certain social services for some immigrants, though full wording of the questions has not yet been finalized.

The update comes as debate continues in Alberta over the prospect of separation from Canada. A citizen-led initiative, Stay Free Alberta, has been collecting signatures to trigger a referendum on the issue. The group has said it has already surpassed the required threshold, though that has not been independently verified by Elections Alberta.

Smith has previously stated that any citizen-led referendum question that meets legislative requirements would be placed on the ballot, indicating the potential for multiple high-profile issues to be decided at once.

At the same time, a separate anti-separation petition known as “Forever Canadian” is under review. According to legislative records, the petition was submitted in December and is currently before a legislature committee, which will determine next steps and whether it proceeds to a broader public process.
