A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after a fellow student was stabbed in the library of a central Alberta school.

RCMP say the boy is also charged with aggravated assault in relation to yesterday's attack at Pigeon Lake Regional School in Falun, about 80 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

He has been released on bail and is to appear in court in June.

The 16-year-old victim is in stable condition in hospital and recovering after surgery.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff says the two boys, who are both enrolled as students at the school, know each other and investigators are trying to determine why the attack happened.

Some 250 students from grades 7 to 12 attend the school, and RCMP say some students and staff in the library witnessed the stabbing.

VPD investigates pedestrian fatality

Vancouver Police are investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred last night, and are asking anyone with information to call police. The pedestrian, a 38-year-old man, was struck by a white Tesla at the intersection of Terminal Avenue and Western Street September 25 just before 8:30 p.m. Despite life-saving attempts from first responders, the pedestrian died at the scene. The driver of the Tesla remained at the scene. Speed and impairment are not considered factors in the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.

Alberta's government says it has yet to receive an interim report on the investigation into allegations of corruption over health contracts but it should be finished in the coming days. Alberta won’t enforce federal firearm buyback

The Alberta government is calling a federal gun buyback program an ``attack on law-abiding firearms owners.'' A pilot project in Nova Scotia will be open to eligible gun owners in parts of Cape Breton before being rolled out nationwide. Participants can either deactivate their firearm using a licensed gunsmith or return it to police.
