British Columbia Premier David Eby says businesses affected by potential new U.S. tariffs would be eligible to access a $1.5 billion federal emergency fund if the measures are implemented.

According to Eby, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the regional emergency fund remains available to support provinces facing economic impacts from U.S. trade action. Eby said the funding could provide relief to B.C. industries if the United States proceeds with proposed tariffs on Canadian goods, including duties of up to 50 per cent on certain wood products beginning Aug. 19.

The premier said uncertainty surrounding the proposed tariffs is already affecting businesses across British Columbia, adding that the ongoing trade dispute is creating financial pressure even before any new measures take effect.

Eby also said British Columbia has no plans to return U.S. liquor products to provincial store shelves, despite calls from U.S. President Donald Trump. He said provinces that removed American liquor from government stores continue to view the measure as an important negotiating tool in Canada's trade discussions with the United States.

The comments come as a new 10 per cent U.S. tariff on certain Canadian goods has added pressure on Canadian exporters. The tariff was imposed over allegations that Canada has not done enough to prevent imports of products made with forced labour into the United States.

Greer Takes Tough Stance Amid Canada-U.S. Tariff Talks

As Canada continues efforts to secure a tariff deal with the United States, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has issued a strong response. Speaking to reporters in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday, Greer said the proposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods are not a sudden decision. He said they are a response to retaliatory measures previously imposed by Canada against U.S. products. Greer criticized Canada for imposing retaliatory tariffs rather than engaging directly with Washington, comparing the approach to the strategy used by countries such as China. He pointed to Canadian measure
