British Columbia Chief Coroner Jatinder Baidwan announced Tuesday that a formal investigation will be conducted into the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge.

Speaking at a press conference in Victoria, Baidwan said the purpose of the investigation is to establish the facts surrounding the incident and issue recommendations aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. He said the process is also intended to help restore public confidence in the system.

According to the BC Coroners Service, the investigation will examine how individuals experiencing a mental health crisis are identified and what supports are made available to them. Baidwan said the review will also assess access to mental health services in rural and remote communities.

The announcement follows recent remarks by Premier David Eby, who said the province would pursue either a public inquiry or a coroner-led investigation into the shooting.

Connect Newsroom has requested additional details from the BC Coroners Service regarding timelines, scope and whether public hearings will be held. No response was received by publication time.

The investigation is intended to clarify the circumstances of the shooting and examine gaps in mental health response systems. The coroner’s recommendations are expected after the review process concludes, though a timeline has not yet been provided.

The Quebec riding is being closely watched as it could decide whether the government crosses the majority threshold.
