B.C. Ex-Conservative MLAs Announce Plans to Form New Political Party

Two former British Columbia Conservative MLAs have announced plans to form a new political party, saying they want to provide an alternative for voters who feel politically homeless.

Delta South MLA Ian Paton and Peter Milobar, who left the Conservative Party earlier this month, say they plan to register the new party with Elections BC before the fall legislative session.

Paton said the direction of the Conservatives under new leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay no longer aligns with his beliefs. He said the new party would provide “a home” for people who feel politically homeless in B.C.

Speaking to reporters in Victoria alongside Paton, Milobar said the new party could initially consist of just the two MLAs, but he has been hearing from members of the Conservative caucus that some could potentially join them.

Milobar said many voters are unhappy with the governing New Democrats but do not see a path forward with the Conservatives under Findlay.

Paton’s departure is the latest in a series of high-profile changes within the B.C. Conservative Party since Findlay was elected leader in May.

Executive director Angelo Isidorou, president Aisha Estey and vice-president Sharon White have all left their positions in recent weeks.

Abbotsford-Mission MLA Reann Gasper has also resigned from her seat to allow Findlay to run in the upcoming byelection.
