Prime Minister Mark Carney is opening a two-day Canada investment summit in Toronto aimed at attracting $1 trillion in investment over the next five years.
The summit is focused on key sectors including energy, infrastructure, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. Hundreds of investors from Canada and abroad are taking part in what is described as the country’s first investment summit of its kind.
Executives from major international companies including BlackRock, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Mastercard and Microsoft are among those attending. The formal opening is scheduled for Monday evening with a special dinner at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Carney has already indicated to a gathering of Canadian business leaders and politicians that several significant investment agreements have been finalized ahead of the summit’s formal opening. Details of those agreements were not provided in the supplied information.
The summit is also facing opposition. Several labour unions, Indigenous leaders and environmental activists are planning demonstrations over concerns about the role of large corporations in shaping Canada’s economic future.
