Canada Post has begun sending letters to residents whose homes are expected to lose door-to-door mail delivery as part of a nationwide transition to community mailboxes.
In notices sent to customers, the Crown corporation said mail and parcel delivery to residents’ doors will continue for now, but service is expected to shift to community mailboxes by late 2026 or early 2027.
According to Canada Post, the change is being introduced as part of efforts to modernize operations and improve the long-term financial sustainability of the postal system. The plan would affect approximately four million addresses across Canada that still receive door-to-door delivery service.
The corporation said safe and suitable locations for community mailboxes will be identified in neighbourhoods over the coming weeks and months. Canada Post confirmed on April 16 that discussions had already begun with 13 communities where the new delivery model could be implemented before the end of this year.
Canada Post said the transition will be rolled out in phases across the country over a five-year period. The corporation has not yet released a full list of communities expected to be included in the first phase.
The change is expected to affect residents who have relied on home delivery for decades, including seniors and people with mobility challenges. Additional details on mailbox locations and implementation timelines are expected in future updates from the corporation.
