Canada-U.S. trade talks have entered another critical phase, with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer holding another emergency meeting in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. Canada’s chief trade negotiator, Alesia Charette, is also taking part in the meeting.

The latest meeting comes as both sides race against the clock to reach a trade agreement and prevent the situation from escalating further. It is the second face-to-face meeting between Canadian and U.S. officials this week and the fourth in the past three weeks.

According to reports, the negotiations are focused on a possible deal in which the United States would reduce some tariffs in exchange for several concessions from Canada.

Among the concessions reportedly being discussed are the removal of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. automobiles, lifting provincial restrictions on the sale of American alcohol and changes to Canada’s dairy import quotas.

Canadian and U.S. trade officials are reportedly hoping to finalize a joint trade proposal by Monday and put it before U.S. President Donald Trump for a final decision. Officials want to ensure Trump has enough time to review the proposal before making a decision on the tariffs.

The urgency is being driven by the threat of 50 per cent U.S. tariffs on hundreds of Canadian products. Under the latest tariff measures, goods covered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) would also not receive an exemption.

That has increased pressure on negotiators to reach a compromise before the tariffs take effect. For Canada, avoiding broad-based tariffs is a major priority because they could significantly affect Canadian exporters and increase costs for businesses on both sides of the border.

The latest Washington meeting is therefore being seen as an important opportunity for both countries to narrow their differences and find a last-minute trade solution.
