Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand is travelling to Brussels this week for a series of high-level engagements with European Union and NATO officials, the federal government confirmed Monday. The trip marks a significant step in Ottawa’s ongoing efforts to deepen transatlantic cooperation on security, economic resilience and Arctic strategy.

During her visit, Minister Anand is set to meet senior EU leaders on Tuesday. The agenda is expected to include discussions on strengthening supply chains, advancing shared economic-security objectives and coordinating further sanctions and measures in response to Russian actions in Ukraine and increased aggression in the Arctic region. Those talks aim to reinforce Canada’s role alongside European partners in safeguarding global stability.

On Wednesday, she will join foreign-minister-level talks at NATO, including the informal NATO–Ukraine Council meeting. The meetings come at a critical time as members review alliance priorities amid escalating tensions in Europe’s north and Arctic region. Anand will also hold separate bilateral discussions with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and other senior officials to highlight Canada’s strategic interests and contributions within the alliance.

Government officials describe the visit as a key demonstration of Canada’s commitment to collective security and Arctic diplomacy. Analysts say strengthened coordination with EU and NATO partners could help Ottawa influence emerging security dynamics in the High North and ensure greater cooperation on trade, defence and sanctions enforcement.
