Prime Minister Mark Carney used his New Year’s Eve message to reflect on what he described as a challenging year for Canada, while urging Canadians to carry a sense of unity and care into 2026.

As the country prepared to welcome the new year, Carney said 2025 offered moments of joy and connection, shaped by the people and communities that support one another across the country. He encouraged Canadians to take time to reflect on those personal and collective experiences.

At the same time, the prime minister acknowledged the difficulties Canada faced over the past year, saying it brought more than its share of challenges. He did not point to specific events but emphasized that periods of strain often reveal the country’s underlying strengths.

Carney said 2025 served as a reminder that Canadians are part of a generous and caring nation, noting that mutual support and community spirit continue to define the country, even during uncertain times.

Looking ahead, the prime minister said he intends to carry those values forward into 2026, stressing that Canada is strongest when its people look out for one another.

B.C. Rental Protection Fund surpasses goal, secures nearly 2,200 homes

More than 2,000 homes in British Columbia are now protected under the province’s Rental Protection Fund, giving thousands of renters greater housing stability and access to affordable rents. Launched in 2023 with a $500-million provincial investment, the fund works with non-profit housing providers to purchase rental buildings at risk of being sold to the private market. This approach helps ensure tenants can remain in their homes and communities without facing sudden rent increases or evictions. The fund originally aimed to secure 2,000 homes over three years.
