Carney criticizes Trump's new 50% tariff on Canadian imports

Prime Minister Mark Carney has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a new 50 per cent tariff on Canadian imports, calling it another example of the United States' unilateral trade policy. In a statement, Carney said the measure is a direct violation of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

According to the Prime Minister's statement, Canada has previously responded with proportionate countermeasures after the United States imposed what Ottawa described as unjustified tariffs on Canada's auto sector. Carney said Canada remains committed to protecting its workers, farmers, businesses, sovereignty and families, adding that provinces and Canadians are united in defending the country's economic interests.

Carney also said Canada has put forward proposals to help resolve the trade dispute and modernize CUSMA. He said the federal government remains prepared to continue negotiations with the United States in the coming weeks and supports fair, rules-based trade.

According to the U.S. announcement, the new 50 per cent tariff is expected to apply within the next month to goods covered under CUSMA.
