Amid the latest escalation in the Canada-U.S. trade war, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has warned that the province could cut off electricity and critical mineral supplies to the United States if President Donald Trump’s trade measures push the situation into a more serious phase.

Following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to step back from trade talks with the United States late Friday, Ford said that “everything is on the table” as Canada considers possible retaliatory measures.

Ford warned that Ontario has important resources that the United States relies on, including electricity and critical minerals, and said the province could use these supplies as leverage if the trade conflict continues to escalate.

Meanwhile, former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Jean Charest, speaking to a U.S. television network, said the trade war had “completely gone off the rails.” He warned that the tariffs could ultimately increase costs for American households, with the average family potentially facing an additional $1,000 in annual expenses.

Charest said Canada has stood up for its sovereignty throughout the trade dispute and will continue to do so. He also stressed that the United States would struggle to find a friend, partner and reliable supplier like Canada.

The latest developments have further strained relations between the two countries, with Ottawa and Washington now facing growing pressure to resolve the escalating tariff dispute.
