U.S. aviation regulators are investigating a near-miss incident involving an Air Canada jet and a Republic Airways flight at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA said the Republic Airways pilots took evasive action after their aircraft missed its intended approach and came too close to the Air Canada plane. Both flight crews responded to onboard collision-avoidance alerts, the agency said.
No injuries were reported. The FAA has not released further details on how close the aircraft came to each other or what factors contributed to the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
The event follows a fatal collision last month at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, where two Canadian pilots were killed after an Air Canada aircraft struck a fire truck on the ground. That incident remains under investigation by U.S. authorities.
According to the FAA and industry groups, staffing shortages among air traffic controllers in the United States have been an ongoing concern, with some controllers previously working without pay during federal government shutdowns. Regulators have not confirmed whether staffing levels were a factor in Monday’s incident.
