Former prime minister Justin Trudeau made a brief appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, using the global stage to speak about the role of diplomacy and soft power in international relations.

During a panel discussion, Trudeau emphasized that Canada’s influence abroad has traditionally relied on cooperation and respect for sovereignty, rather than interference in other countries’ internal affairs or competition over natural resources. His remarks were met with attention from delegates as global tensions and shifting alliances continue to dominate discussions in Europe and North America.

Trudeau was accompanied by his partner, pop singer Katy Perry, who was seated in the front row during the session. Perry smiled as Trudeau referenced Canada’s long standing approach to international engagement, including its position against exploiting other states for energy or economic gain.

The former prime minister also dismissed suggestions raised recently by U.S. President Donald Trump that Canada could become the 51st state, saying Canadians have clearly rejected that idea. The comment reflects ongoing political rhetoric from Washington that has drawn concern and criticism across the Canadian political spectrum.

Following the session, the couple left the venue without addressing questions from Canadian media gathered outside. The World Economic Forum continues this week with expected high profile appearances from political leaders and corporate executives, including Trump, whose stated interest in annexing Greenland is anticipated to spark further debate.

Jason Kenney Links UCP Calgary-Shaw Defeat to Alberta Separation Debate

Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has linked the UCP’s defeat in the Calgary-Shaw byelection to the upcoming separation referendum, saying the debate over Alberta leaving Canada is turning away Conservative voters who also feel strongly about the country. Kenney said the separation issue is pushing some nationalist supporters toward opposition parties such as the NDP. He believes the October 19 referendum is having a negative impact on Conservative support. In the Calgary-Shaw byelection, Alberta NDP candidate Kyle Campbell defeated UCP candidate Mike Derry by 582 votes. Campbell received

Rising Oil Prices Raise Odds of Bank of Canada Rate Hike

Canada’s central bank could raise interest rates in the coming months as rising global crude oil prices increase inflationary pressures. Economists believe the Bank of Canada’s chances of raising rates by December are growing, despite Canada’s annual inflation rate remaining steady at 3% last month. Economists at Desjardins Group and RSM Canada say it may be difficult for Bank of Canada officials to ignore oil prices above US$100 a barrel, particularly if the increase persists. While core inflation remains under control for now, economists warn that continued oil price shocks could push
