Investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team have released the name of the man fatally shot in Surrey late Friday night, hoping the disclosure will generate new leads in the case. Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Jaskaran Birring of Chilliwack, noting he had previous police contacts and was believed to have ties to the drug trade.

Officers were called to a residential area shortly before midnight, where they found Birring suffering from critical injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts at the scene, police say he did not survive.

IHIT says early evidence indicates the shooting was targeted and connected to organized crime activity in the region. About 15 minutes after the attack, first responders located a burning Dodge Ram pickup near 136 Street and 115 Avenue, an incident investigators believe may be linked.

The killing marks Surrey’s sixth homicide of the year and comes amid ongoing concerns about gang-related violence in the Lower Mainland. Police are urging anyone with dash-cam footage or information from the area where the truck was found to contact investigators.

Alberta health officials have issued a standing measles exposure advisory for Parkland County, west of Edmonton, as confirmed cases continue to be reported across the province. Alberta Health says individuals who live, work, attend school or travel in the Parkland County area should monitor for symptoms and ensure their immunizations are up to date. A standing advisory means residents should remain alert for potential exposure rather than focusing on a single location or date. As of Thursday, Alberta has recorded 71 confirmed measles cases in 2026. Health authorities say the majority of cases

Canadian evacuation flights from Cuba conclude amid severe fuel shortage

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says the final Canadian airline evacuation flights from Cuba have now concluded, as the country faces a deepening aviation fuel crisis that has disrupted international travel. According to the federal government, approximately 27,900 Canadians were safely transported home through coordinated efforts involving major carriers. Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat have officially suspended their services to Cuba until further notice due to the ongoing shortage of aviation fuel, which has made refuelling for international flights difficult.
