Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the Port of Vancouver in Delta on Thursday, where he announced a proposed $10 billion federal investment to expand the port's capacity and strengthen Canada's access to international markets beyond the United States.

According to the Prime Minister, the expansion project is intended to increase Canadian exports to non-U.S. markets by 50 per cent, with a focus on agricultural products and other key commodities. The federal government says the investment is aimed at improving Canada's trade infrastructure and supporting long-term economic growth.

Carney said the construction phase of the project is expected to create between 17,000 and 18,000 jobs. Once the expansion is complete and operational, the project is expected to support approximately 17,000 full-time jobs.

The Prime Minister said the expanded port capacity would provide direct benefits to Canada's agriculture sector and other export industries. He added that the federal government is pursuing multiple initiatives simultaneously to help Canadian businesses capitalize on new international trade opportunities.

Canada deports 111 foreign nationals linked to extortion and organized crime

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says 111 foreign nationals have been removed from Canada in cases involving extortion and organized crime, with 188 removal orders issued as of Sept. 3.
