Registration numbers rise as Canada monitors situation affecting Canadians in Mexico

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says the number of Canadians registering with federal officials while in Mexico has increased sharply, as Ottawa works to assess the situation and provide assistance.

Anand said 26,305 Canadians have now registered with Global Affairs Canada. As of the previous day, that number was approximately 8,000. She cautioned that the actual number of Canadians currently in Mexico could be significantly higher, as not everyone has completed registration with the federal government.

According to the minister, Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre received 440 calls from Canadians in Mexico over the past 24 hours. Many of the inquiries were related to flight availability and travel advisories, reflecting growing concern among travellers seeking updated information.

Anand said the federal government remains in ongoing contact with Mexican authorities to help ensure air services can resume safely as soon as possible. She added that officials will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

The minister also urged Canadians in affected areas to follow the instructions of local authorities and to register with Global Affairs Canada in order to receive timely information and support. The department has advised travellers to monitor official travel notices and remain in contact with airlines regarding flight changes.

The developments come as thousands of Canadians travel to Mexico during the winter season, including residents from British Columbia and Alberta, where Mexico remains a popular holiday destination.
