Richmond RCMP warning the public regarding alleged fraudulent sales of vehicles.

Richmond RCMP is issuing a public warning regarding alleged fraudulent sales of vehicles. The victims in these investigations are typically approached with a “money making opportunity” involving the purchasing and exporting of high-demand luxury vehicles.

The victim purchases the vehicle with third party financing, has it registered in their name, and the vehicle is then stored at a secondary location. Shortly afterwards, the victims are reportedly told the vehicle has been stolen and should report it to ICBC.

“These victims are unwittingly participating in a criminal offence as a form of money mule,” says Corporal Ryan Lee, Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit, “A money mule is someone who transfers illegally obtained money on behalf of criminals, however, in the case of these investigations it’s vehicles being used instead of money.”

Richmond RCMP believe the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the alleged stolen vehicles are being changed. Changing the VIN conceals the stolen status of the vehicle which then allows the suspect(s) to sell it locally or ship it overseas.

To avoid falling prey to this scam, Richmond RCMP recommends individuals not register vehicles for other parties.

Anyone who may have information or been a victim of this scheme, is urged to report it to the police of jurisdiction.
