Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says it may be too late for a citizen-led petition seeking a ban on new coal mining projects to be included in the province's Oct. 19 referendum vote.

Earlier this month, Alberta musician Corb Lund submitted what he said were more than 200,000 signatures in support of a petition that would require the Alberta government to consider legislation banning new coal mining or submit the matter to a provincewide referendum if the signatures are verified.

According to Alberta's citizen initiative rules, a successful petition can compel the government to either introduce legislation reflecting the proposal or place the question before voters. Verification of the signatures remains ongoing.

Smith said Elections Alberta, which administers provincial votes, advised that referendum questions needed to be finalized by June 1 to allow sufficient time for ballot preparation and administration. She suggested that timeline may make it difficult to add the coal mining question to the ballot already scheduled for Oct. 19.

The United Conservative government has already announced plans to include 10 referendum questions in the October vote, including one asking Albertans whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second referendum on secession.

Bank of Canada Could Raise Interest Rates for the First Time in Three Years

Canada’s central bank is set to announce its monetary policy decision on Wednesday, with many experts anticipating a possible interest rate hike. If the Bank of Canada raises rates, it would mark the first increase in three years. Economists say the Canadian economy is facing two conflicting challenges. On one hand, economic growth remains weak, which would normally support cutting interest rates to stimulate the economy. On the other hand, rising oil prices are driving inflation, and the central bank may not want to wait until price pressures spread to other sectors before taking action. Ma

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to Skip First Nations–First Ministers Meeting

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will not attend the First Nations–First Ministers meeting being held in Ottawa today. Speaking at a separate news conference on Saturday, Smith said her government would send representatives to the meeting in her place. Conservatives Introduce Bill to Lift B.C. North Coast Oil Tanker Ban

Canada’s main opposition party has introduced a bill in the House of Commons to lift the oil tanker ban along British Columbia’s North Coast. The bill is set to enter its second reading this week. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and other opposition MPs have also written to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging him to remove the ban. The Conservatives argue that the restriction forces Canada to sell its oil to the United States at lower prices, benefiting American refineries while costing Canada billions of dollars in potential revenue. According to the party, Canada could easily export
