A sharp drop in temperature is expected to bring snowfall to Edmonton beginning Tuesday night, following unseasonably warm conditions earlier in the week.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, temperatures are forecast to fall by roughly 10 degrees from Monday’s high of 16 C, with daytime conditions Tuesday bringing periods of rain or a mix of rain and snow.

The precipitation is expected to transition to heavier snowfall overnight into Wednesday, affecting a wide area from Hinton and Grand Cache east to Cold Lake and Lloydminster. Forecast estimates indicate 5 to 15 centimetres of snow across much of the region, while snowfall warnings of 20 to 30 centimetres have been issued for the Hinton and Grand Cache areas.

Temperatures in Edmonton are expected to remain below freezing for most of Wednesday, with daytime highs near -2 C to -3 C, potentially creating slippery road conditions during the midweek commute.

Environment Canada advises that conditions may remain cold and cloudy through Thursday in Edmonton, while heavy snowfall in parts of southern Alberta could persist into Thursday morning.

Canada recorded a merchandise trade surplus of $2.72 billion in April, up 55 per cent from the previous month and the highest level in 15 months, according to data released Tuesday by Statistics Canada. The increase was driven in part by higher crude oil prices, which supported the value of Canadian exports during the month. The latest figures come as global energy markets continue to respond to geopolitical tensions affecting oil supply and pricing. Despite federal efforts to diversify trade and reduce reliance on the United States amid ongoing trade disputes, the U.S. remained Canada’s dom
