Trump administration’s new 50 per cent tariffs on 110 Canadian products take effect

New U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent on 110 Canadian products took effect Tuesday, expanding the range of goods affected by the escalating trade dispute between Ottawa and Washington.

The new duties apply to products including certain cheeses, all-terrain vehicles, motorboats, furniture, aluminum products, paper and wood products, iron and steel structures, mattresses and lamps. The changes were made under U.S. tariff measures announced by the Trump administration.

At the same time, the United States removed 10 Canadian product categories from the 50 per cent tariff list. Those include salt, Portland cement, certain sugars, tissue and towel stock, paper bed sheets, refined lead, low-voltage switchgear and fishing-rod parts, along with specified whisky and liqueur products.

Canada had imposed its own counter-tariffs on U.S. goods effective Sept. 8. According to the Canadian Department of Finance, the measures cover about $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports and include tariff rates of 15, 25 and 50 per cent, depending on the product.
