Canada’s main opposition Conservative Party is stepping up pressure on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government over a deal with the United States that was ultimately rejected.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman are demanding that the government release the documents related to the failed agreement, arguing that Canadians deserve transparency about what was discussed and why the deal was turned down.

Poilievre has repeatedly raised the issue, saying Canadians are united in defending Canadian workers and industries against what he described as illegal U.S. tariffs. However, he stressed that transparency is necessary to maintain that unity.

The Conservative leader questioned Carney over the potential economic impact of the government’s retaliatory tariffs on Canadian families. He also asked what was included in the proposed agreement that led the Prime Minister to reject it.

Lantsman also called on the government to immediately release the agreement in order to put an end to speculation. She pointed to the Gordie Howe International Bridge issue as an example of how greater transparency helped reveal the facts.

The opposition maintains that Canadians have a right to know the details surrounding the rejected deal and the government’s approach to the ongoing trade dispute with the United States.

The political pressure is expected to intensify as Parliament prepares to resume on September 21, with the Conservatives likely to continue pressing the Carney government for answers on the agreement and its tariff strategy.
