Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province has signed an agreement aimed at removing barriers to interprovincial alcohol sales, a move intended to allow Canadian producers to sell directly to customers in participating provinces.

According to the Alberta government, the agreement commits participating jurisdictions to update their regulations to permit direct-to-consumer alcohol sales across provincial boundaries. The province says the changes are expected to create new market opportunities for Alberta's wine, beer and spirits producers.

Smith said Alberta has reached the agreement with Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and British Columbia. Alberta says the initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce internal trade barriers across Canada.

The announcement comes as Canada continues to pursue measures to strengthen domestic trade amid proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian alcohol announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Alberta says Quebec and Yukon are expected to join the agreement, while British Columbia has set a target of allowing direct interprovincial alcohol sales by February 2027.
