Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada’s next ambassador to the United States will have time to get up to speed before North America’s trade relationship enters a new round of negotiations. Carney told reporters that federal consultations on the renewal of the Canada–U.S.–Mexico Agreement have wrapped up, while officials in Washington are only beginning their own review.

He said the three-country assessment of the trade pact is expected to intensify in the new year, a process that could carry major implications for Western Canada’s transportation corridors, agriculture exports, and manufacturing supply chains that rely on cross-border stability.

Current ambassador Kirsten Hillman announced this week she plans to conclude her posting in early 2026. Her departure opens the door for the federal government to select a new envoy ahead of what is expected to be a detailed review of continental trade rules.

Carney declined to address speculation that Mark Wiseman, a well-known Canadian business executive, is being considered for the role. He said only that the government will confirm its choice in the coming weeks.
