Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is prepared to adopt a tougher position if a trade agreement with the United States is not reached before the Aug. 19 deadline, while emphasizing that negotiations remain the federal government's priority.

Speaking at a news conference in Toronto on Wednesday, Carney said Canada has several options available for a potential response if talks fail. However, he ruled out using oil and natural gas exports as leverage in the negotiations. He said the government's objective is to eliminate all sector-specific U.S. tariffs, including those affecting the automotive industry.

"Our tone is already firm, and we will do whatever is necessary," Carney said, outlining the federal government's position on the ongoing trade discussions.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Canada's leadership during a speech in Las Vegas, describing it as "very bad." Connect Newsroom contacted the Prime Minister's Office for comment on Trump's remarks. The office declined to comment.

The trade discussions continue as International Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Canada's chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, remain in Washington for meetings with U.S. senators and industry representatives ahead of the Aug. 19 deadline.
