Coquitlam RCMP announce charge approval for weapon related offences

Following a Coquitlam RCMP investigation into a 2022 stabbing incident, now 23-year-old Shane Aston Gero of Port Coquitlam, and a youth, also of Port Coquitlam have been criminally charged. The youth cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act in order to protect their privacy.

On June 4, 2022, shortly after 1:00 a.m., Coquitlam RCMP Frontline officers responded to a report of a stabbing near Central Elementary School, located at 2260 Central Avenue, Port Coquitlam.

On June 25, 2025, charges of Aggravated Assault, Assault with a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, were approved by the BC Prosecution Service and laid against Shane Gero and the unnamed youth.

On July 2, 2025, both Shane Gero and the unnamed youth were arrested by Coquitlam RCMP for the following offences:

  • Aggravated Assault - Section 268 of the Criminal Code;
  • Assault with a Weapon - Section 267 of the Criminal Code; and
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose - Section 88(1) of the Criminal Code.

After a complex and thorough investigation by the Coquitlam RCMP General Duty Section, which was the initiating investigative section, and the Coquitlam RCMP General Investigation Section, multiple charges against Shane Gero and the youth were approved, said Media Relations Officer Acting Sergeant John Graham.

Members of the Coquitlam RCMP work proactively every day to help ensure our communities and neighborhoods are free of violence, but when such incidents do occur we work tirelessly to bring those responsible to our courts. The result of this protracted investigation is a testament to the dedicated operational and investigative police efforts of our team.

Shane Gero is in-custody at time of writing, while the British Columbia courts decide the next course of action. The unnamed youth has been released by the courts and is subject to various court-imposed conditions while the judicial process continues.
