The Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich., is expected to move closer to opening this week, with reports indicating a ribbon-cutting ceremony could take place Friday. The bridge could be opened to regular traffic as early as next Monday.

The project drew attention earlier this year after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not allow the bridge to open unless the United States received an ownership stake in the crossing.

Asked about those comments on Tuesday, the prime minister said no behind-the-scenes discussions or concessions regarding ownership of the bridge had taken place. He welcomed the anticipated opening, saying the crossing would benefit residents, travellers and trade on both sides of the Canada–U.S. border.

According to project information, the bridge was financed by the Government of Canada. The crossing is intended to serve the public interests of both Canada and Michigan and is expected to become a key transportation and trade link between the two countries.

Former Surrey mayor calls for independent investigation into SPS chief’s dismissal

Former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum is calling for an independent police investigation into the dismissal of Surrey Police Service Chief Norm Lipinski and the resignations of two Surrey Police Board directors. McCallum said no one is above the law, including councillors and mayors, and argued that if any rules were broken, those responsible should face appropriate legal consequences. He also said the investigation should not be conducted by the RCMP, citing concerns about perceived conflicts because current Surrey Police Board chair Rob Stutt is a former RCMP member.
