Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the federal Liberal government after recent byelection results, arguing its parliamentary majority does not reflect direct voter support.
Speaking after the results, Poilievre said the Liberals’ position in the House of Commons was achieved through what he described as “backroom deals,” alleging that some Members of Parliament joined the government without a mandate from their constituents. He claimed those moves undermined voter trust, though he did not provide specific examples during his remarks.
Poilievre also targeted Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing the government of focusing on political maneuvering rather than economic management. He said Canada’s deficit has grown significantly and pointed to rising housing and grocery costs, stating that affordability remains a key concern for Canadians.
The Conservative leader added that his party will continue to hold the government accountable in Parliament and advocate for voters. He also confirmed he intends to remain leader of the Conservative Party in the next federal election.
