Prime Minister Mark Carney announces India visit as part of Indo Pacific tour

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to visit India next week as part of a broader trip to the Indo Pacific region that will also include stops in Australia and Japan. The tour is scheduled to run from February 26 to March 7 and is aimed at strengthening trade, energy, technology and defence partnerships.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney will begin his visit in Mumbai, where he is expected to meet business leaders to promote investment opportunities in Canada. He will then travel to New Delhi for talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, artificial intelligence, clean energy and defence.

The India stop will mark Carney’s first official visit to the country since succeeding Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister. The trip comes at a time when Ottawa is seeking to diversify trade relationships and deepen engagement in the Indo Pacific region, which the federal government has identified as a strategic priority.

Following India, Carney will travel to Sydney and Canberra, where he is scheduled to address the Australian Parliament. Officials say it would be the first time in two decades that a Canadian prime minister has addressed Australia’s legislature. The final leg of the tour in Japan will centre on clean energy cooperation, food security and regional security in the Indo Pacific.

In a statement, Carney said Canada is focusing on areas within its control during a period of global uncertainty, including building new international partnerships that create opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.
