Statistics Canada plans workforce reduction affecting about 850 employees

Statistics Canada says it will cut approximately 850 positions as part of a broader effort to adjust its operations, along with a reduction of about 12 per cent of its executive team.

Carter Mann, a spokesperson for the national statistical agency, said affected employees are expected to be notified within the next two weeks. He added that the agency remains focused on meeting its mandate to provide reliable data for Canadians while adapting to internal changes.

According to data from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, Statistics Canada employed 7,274 people as of March 31, 2025. Of that total, 99 positions were classified as part of the executive team.

The planned reductions come amid wider workforce reviews across the federal public service. Several departments, including Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Employment and Social Development Canada, informed staff late last year that details about potential job cuts would be communicated early in 2026.

Federal departments have been under pressure to manage costs while maintaining services, with unions and employee groups closely watching how staffing changes may affect workloads and data quality, particularly at agencies that play a key role in informing public policy.
