Surrey police charge 25 drivers with excessive speeding over four days, vehicles impounded

The Surrey Police Service says officers charged 25 drivers for excessive speeding over a four-day enforcement period in Surrey, with all vehicles impounded under provincial traffic laws.

According to a police release, members of the service’s Road Safety Section conducted traffic enforcement between March 6 and March 9 and stopped multiple drivers travelling far above posted speed limits.

Police reported one driver travelling 183 km/h in an 80 km/h zone who also did not have insurance. Another driver was recorded at 139 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and did not have a valid driver’s licence. Additional speeds included 165 km/h in an 80 km/h zone and 114 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

Several of the drivers were novice motorists. Police said multiple drivers holding Class 7N licences were stopped travelling between 127 km/h and 129 km/h in 80 km/h zones, while another Class 7N driver was recorded travelling 114 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

According to the police release, four of the stopped vehicles were travelling more than double the posted speed limit. Twelve vehicles were travelling faster than 120 km/h, which police say is the highest posted legal speed in British Columbia and is found on sections of the Coquihalla Highway.

Police say excessive speeding remains a road safety concern in Surrey and warned that drivers who significantly exceed posted limits can face immediate vehicle impoundment and other penalties.
