WestJet, flight attendants sign operational wind-down agreement as Aug. 2 strike deadline approaches

WestJet and the union representing approximately 4,400 flight attendants have signed an operational wind-down agreement outlining procedures to safely land aircraft and return cabin crew home in the event of a strike.

Flight attendants could begin strike action as early as Aug. 2 if the two sides fail to reach a new collective agreement. A work stoppage could disrupt travel plans for thousands of passengers during the August long weekend.

Under Canada's labour rules, the union must provide at least 72 hours' strike notice before any job action can begin. If notice is issued, some flight cancellations could begin as early as Friday, according to the airline.

WestJet says passengers with flights booked between July 30 and Aug. 4 may change their reservation once or cancel their trip without paying additional fees. The airline said the temporary policy is intended to provide flexibility for travellers ahead of any potential service disruption.

According to the parties involved in the negotiations, key outstanding issues include ground pay and boarding pay. Whether a strike proceeds is expected to depend on the outcome of ongoing bargaining between WestJet and the union.
