A major development is unfolding in British Columbia politics, with Premier David Eby expected to formally announce a provincial election during a news conference at the government buildings in Victoria on Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement would bring an end to days of speculation over whether the NDP government would call an early election. Eby has already indicated that his caucus and Elections B.C. should be prepared for an election, while political developments within the B.C. Conservative Party have intensified speculation.
The B.C. Conservatives also cancelled a news conference scheduled for Tuesday, citing the possibility of an election call. The party has been dealing with significant internal changes, including the resignation of leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay and changes within its caucus.
The election, if called, would be British Columbia’s 44th general election. The NDP government still has roughly two years remaining in its current mandate, but it currently holds only a narrow majority in the legislature.
According to the expected election calendar, if Eby calls the election today, British Columbians could go to the polls on October 24. The potential provincial election would also overlap with the province’s municipal election period, which has raised concerns among local government officials.
