The party has distanced itself from the statement made by the former Chief Minister of Punjab and currently Member of Parliament from Jalandhar, Charanjit Singh Channi in the Lok Sabha about Amritpal Singh.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh termed Channi's statement as his personal opinion.

However, the Congress did not condemn Channi's statement, but according to sources, several Congress MPs are angry with Channi's statement in the Lok Sabha about Amritpal.

After this, the party distanced itself from Channi's statement. Channi had made a statement in support of pro-Khalistan 'Waris Punjab' chief and independent MP from Khadur Sahib Amritpal Singh.

He had said that this is also a kind of emergency when the person elected as Member of Parliament by nearly 2 lakh people of Punjab has been kept in jail.
