Prime Minister Mark Carney faced flight delays Monday due to a technical issue affecting airports in the New York City area, causing him to miss a key United Nations event.

According to reports, a circuit failure at an air traffic control centre in Philadelphia led to hundreds of flight cancellations across the U.S. Northeast.

In Carney’s absence, Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations, David Lametti, represented Canada at the Partners for Multilateralism summit. Lametti took part in a roundtable discussion with European Council President António Costa and Kenyan President William Ruto, emphasizing the importance of strengthening multilateralism and international partnerships.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Carney arrived in New York late Monday night. He is scheduled to participate Tuesday in discussions on a two-state solution, focused on supporting an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.
