Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing significant backlash within his own party. The number of Liberal MPs publicly calling for his resignation has risen to 16, with the first MP to do so in June now urging his colleagues to join him.

Wayne Long, the Liberal MP for New Brunswick, sent a letter to fellow MPs on Wednesday morning, which he also posted on his Facebook page. In the letter, Long stated that Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation is not only embarrassing for the party, but also reflects poorly on the Prime Minister’s Office, which he holds responsible.

He further called on his fellow MPs and cabinet ministers to speak out. He said that he time for hand-wringing and whispering behind closed doors is over. Long wrote in the letter that this is not just a one-man affair; this is about saving the party from a historic defeat.

Sources indicate that other current and former MPs have also personally demanded Trudeau’s resignation.

Federal bank loaning $1B for BC Ferries to buy Chinese-made ships

A federal Crown corporation is loaning BC Ferries $1 billion to help buy four Chinese-made ferries, a purchase that federal transport minister Chrystia Freeland recently said was dismaying and should involve no federal funds. Canada Infrastructure Bank confirmed the loan on Thursday, saying the new electric ferries "wouldn't likely be purchased" without the financing. It says the low-cost loan consists of up to $690 million to buy the vessels and up to $310 million for electrification infrastructure.
