Former England international cricketer Liam Plunkett was present on Saturday to provide training to these cricket learners.

More than 100 young cricketers gathered at West Newton Community Park in Surrey on Saturday for a free one-day cricket clinic, part of TD Bank’s Young Wickets program to develop grassroots cricket across Canada.

The event featured former England international Liam Plunkett, who helped his team win the 2019 World Cup. He was joined by South African-American cricketer Corné Dry and Canadian international Mannat Hundal.

Plunkett told Connect FM he was impressed by the enthusiasm in Surrey: “There’s great potential for cricket in Canada. I’m happy to be here and contribute to the game’s growth.”

Hundal, who plays for Canada’s women’s team, said having top-level players present inspires young athletes. “I learned a lot myself from Plunkett today, and I know many others did too. His presence shows these kids what is possible.”

TD Bank senior manager Mick Ramos said supporting the program reflects the bank’s commitment to community: “We’re excited to contribute to developing the next generation of cricket in Surrey and Canada. Giving back is integral to TD.”

Parents and players told Connect FM the clinic was a valuable experience. “My son has played cricket in the park for years, but today he learned directly from professionals. It’s amazing to see this happening in Surrey,” said Parveen Sharma, one parent who brought his young son to participate in the clinic.

Clinic participants received a free “Quick Kit” including a bat, wickets, ball, water bottle, and guide to help them continue playing at home.

Launched in Toronto, the Young Wickets program has now reached Surrey and will expand to Edmonton next weekend.
